Shopping List Before Plastic Surgery: Prepare Properly

By Peter Fisher, MD on April 18, 2018

Writing a shopping list over coffeeRecovering from a plastic surgery procedure takes time. For major body contouring surgeries, for example, you may need to take time off from work for three weeks. That time off does not have to be boring or unpleasant, however. There are plenty of things you can pick up before the surgery date that will make healing go by smoother.

The team at our San Antonio, TX would like to offer a suggested shopping list for plastic surgery patients. Buy these groceries and supplies before your surgery so they’re ready for you as you’re in the process of healing.

Medications and Pain Relievers

Discomfort and soreness are common after plastic surgery. To address this discomfort, be sure to pick up any prescription pain killers ahead of the surgery date. Also make sure to pick up any recommended over-the-counter pain medications for when the post-op discomfort becomes more mild.

First Aid Items and Toiletries

In addition to pain relievers, it’s important to purchase some other common first aid items that will help with the recover process. Gauze, sterile pads, bandages, and wraps are good to have at the ready when you change your surgical dressings. Cold compresses are also important to have to help relieve swelling.

Basic toiletries are good to stock up on as well while you’re at it. Toilet paper, disinfectant wipes, and so forth will help you freshen up and stay clean in the aftermath of surgery.

Ideal Foods for After Surgery

After undergoing surgery, it’s a good idea to have healthy foods ready that are simple to prepare and easy to digest. Keep away from heavily processed foods and consider some of the following items as you are recovering:

  • Pre-prepared gelatin
  • Pre-prepared pudding
  • Oatmeal
  • Cottage cheese
  • Yogurt
  • Popsicles
  • Applesauce
  • Fresh fruits
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Lean meats
  • Low-sodium soups
  • Crackers

Beverages for After Surgery

Water should be your primary source of hydration after surgery, but additional treats might increase comfort and a sense of wellness. In addition to the above food items, consider some of these beverages:

  • Ginger ale
  • Sports drinks
  • Natural fruit juices

Clothing and Garments for Recovery

Having the right clothes for recovery makes a difference. Patients should pick up recommended compression garments to be worn while recovering from surgery. These form-fitting undergarments help provide support during recovery, and can help with the overall healing process.

If you do not have any comfortable, loose-fitting clothes to wear after surgery, consider picking up something affordable and simple to put on and take off.

Items to Keep Yourself Entertained

Even though you’ll be resting after your surgery, that doesn’t mean you can’t entertain yourself. Use the surgery as an excuse to pick up a book you’ve been meaning to read. You can also get some records ready for healing, and maybe cue up your favorite movie.

If physical media is not your preference, there is so much streaming content available online that can help you pass the time. Binge-watch a show you’ve been meaning to see, stream a movie that you missed in theaters, or spend some quality time with your favorite podcast, Pandora, or Spotify.
