How Can I Reduce the Appearance of Breast Lift Scars?
By Peter Fisher, MD on May 18, 2019
Breast lift surgery raises the position of saggy, droopy breasts to restore a more youthful bustline. While breast lift surgery can significantly improve body contours, patients should understand that scarring is an unavoidable side effect of treatment.
Here, Dr. Peter Fisher discusses the steps our patients can take to reduce the appearance of breast lift scars. Contact our San Antonio, TX practice to learn more.
The Breast Lift Technique
There are several surgical techniques, or incisions, that can be used during breast lift surgery. The most important factor in choosing a breast lift technique is selecting an incision that will meet the patient’s unique needs and provide the desired degree of lift. That being said, Dr. Fisher will always recommend the technique that can achieve those results while leaving behind the smallest scar possible.
Even if the most extensive breast lift technique is used, Dr. Fisher carefully places incisions to keep them as small and well-hidden as possible. His expertise also allows him to create and close incisions precisely so that the skin can heal well after surgery.
Keep Incision Sites Clean
In the days and weeks following surgery our San Antonio practice, patients should carefully follow all post-surgical care instructions to keep the incision sites as clean as possible. Keeping the surgical site clean can prevent an infection, which could interfere with healing and worsen the appearance of scars.
Take Steps to Minimize Swelling
Swelling is another natural side effect of breast lift surgery. Unfortunately, excessive swelling can put strain on surgical incisions and make it difficult for them to heal properly. There are several steps that patients can take to minimize swelling as they recover from surgery:
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid salty foods
- Stay elevated when resting
- Wear compression garments as directed
- Begin walking as soon as possible to promote blood circulation
Allow Plenty of Time to Heal
Patients need to give their body plenty of time to rest and heal after breast lift surgery. Any excess stress could prolong healing, which could also result in more defined scars. We recommend that patients refrain from driving or working for at least two weeks following their breast lift procedure. Lifting and other strenuous activities should be avoided for at least six weeks after surgery.
Consider Topical Treatments
Proper post-surgical care is the best way for our San Antonio patients to minimize the appearance of scars, but there are other products that may help as well. Dr. Fisher can recommend silicone scar sheets or scar-minimizing creams that may be effective in promoting healing and reducing scars.
If a patient has fully healed from breast lift surgery and they are still dissatisfied with the appearance of their scars, they may want to consider additional treatment. Steroid injections and laser resurfacing are two techniques that may successfully minimize the appearance of scars.
