Is a Mini Tummy Tuck Right for Me?
A mini tummy tuck is a less invasive and lower-cost alternative to the traditional tummy tuck. While both remove excess fat and skin from below the belly button, the mini tummy tuck targets a much smaller area.
Dr. Peter Fisher with the San Antonio Plastic Surgery Center in San Antonio, TX, has over 25 years of experience performing body-contouring procedures. He understands that many patients are frustrated with stubborn belly fat found below the belly button and is excited to offer this more accessible alternative to the traditional abdominoplasty.
Mini Tummy Tuck vs. Traditional Tummy Tuck
A mini tummy tuck or partial abdominoplasty is a modified version of the traditional tummy tuck, which reduces stomach fat and skin while smoothing out the abdomen. Neither are weight loss surgeries. Rather, they are body contouring procedures.
However, there are several significant differences between the two. A traditional tummy tuck is a more invasive surgery that involves removing a greater amount of skin from the entire abdominal area. It is better suited to patients who previously suffered from obesity, had multiple pregnancies, or experience genetic laxity. A tummy tuck also requires a larger incision to treat muscles separation and remove and tighten loose abdomen skin. This creates a noticeable scar from hip to hip. Recovery time with this procedure is generally four to six weeks.
In contrast, a mini tummy tuck targets a small amount of abdominal skin just below the belly button. It is typically recommended for only minor modifications of the abdomen. While it does leave a scar, it is much less prominent and much more easily concealed than that of a traditional tummy tuck. Among this surgery's benefits are:
- Reduced invasiveness and pain
- Quicker recovery
- Lower cost
- Smaller incision and thinner scar

What Can Patients Expect with a Mini Tummy Tuck?
A mini tummy tuck is generally a two-hour procedure, performed under a local or general anesthetic. Dr. Fisher will create a small incision just above the pubic bone to remove fat from the problem area. Through this opening, abdominal muscles will be tightened, and liposuction may be used to refine the appearance of the stomach. Loose skin will then be stretched over the incision and excess skin will be removed before sealing the incision. Patients can expect to recover in approximately one to three weeks.
