Restore Your Silhouette with Breast Reconstruction
Dr. Peter Fisher offers breast reconstruction for breast patients who have undergone a partial or total mastectomy and wish to restore the size, shape, and appearance of their breasts. At San Antonio Plastic Surgery in San Antonio, TX, we understand the delicate nature of this procedure and are committed to helping you restore your feminine figure and self-confidence. Breast reconstruction can be performed using breast implants or using your own tissue, depending on your specific needs and health goals. With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Fisher is a board-certified plastic surgeon who can deliver outstanding aesthetic results.
Purpose of Breast Reconstruction
Although breast reconstruction is often performed for patients who lose one or both breasts during a mastectomy due to breast cancer, it can also be used to rebuild a breast that required significant tissue removal after a biopsy. During breast reconstruction, Dr. Fisher will work with your mastectomy surgeon to restore your breasts and nipples as close to their natural shape and size as possible.
Breast reconstruction can be performed in conjunction with your mastectomy, or at a later appointment once you are stable and fully recovered. The overall procedure typically involves more than one surgery to help you achieve desired results.
Types of Breast Reconstruction
Dr. Fisher performs breast reconstruction using two techniques.
During this procedure, Dr. Fisher will immediately insert tissue expanders to help stretch the remaining skin as it recovers from the mastectomy. Over time, the tissue expanders are filled with saline during routine follow-up appointments until the desired size is achieved. The overall treatment is less invasive than flap reconstruction and generally takes about four to six months for your final breast size to be achieved.
This procedure uses skin, fat, and muscles from another area of your body, such as the abdomen, buttocks, back, or thighs to rebuild your breasts. Dr. Fisher will carefully create the shape of your breast to your desired looks and size. Although more invasive, patients are able to achieve a more similar feel to natural breast tissue.
What to Expect During Treatment
During your initial consultation, Dr. Fisher will first perform a physical examination, carefully reviewing your body type, medical history and health goals. He will also work closely with your mastectomy surgeon and breast cancer specialists to create a treatment plan tailored to your unique needs and health goals. Once the treatment plan has been solidified, Dr. Fisher will review it with you and discuss any instructions to follow to ensure you experience a smooth surgery and recovery. He will also take the time to address any of your concerns to help bring peace of mind.
On the day of your breast surgery, you will be given general anesthesia to ensure optimal comfort throughout the procedure. In most cases, the surgery will take anywhere from six to seven hours, but surgery length will depend on the complexity of your mastectomy and the type of breast reconstruction technique chosen.
Recovering from Breast Reconstruction
After surgery, you will be moved a private room where Dr. Fisher and staff can monitor your response to surgery. Once released to go home, you will need to carefully follow your at-home care instructions to help assist your recovery and prevent any complications. These steps will include taking medications as prescribed, emptying surgical drains as directed, and wearing your compression garment consistently.
If you are faced with undergoing a mastectomy and are considering all the options available to you, Dr. Fisher and our team at San Antonio Plastic Surgery can help bring peace of mind to an overwhelming situation.
About seven to 10 days after surgery, Dr. Fisher will remove the sutures and check your incisions for any infection. In most cases, it will take about six weeks to recover from breast reconstruction. Patients who undergo a flap reconstruction procedure will typically experience a longer recovery because of multiple surgical locations. Once you have fully recovered, Dr. Fisher can reconstruct your areola and nipple during a follow-up surgery.
