An Otoplasty Can Refine Your Ear Shape to Boost Confidence

Ears that are large, misshapen, or that significantly protrude can lead to poor self-esteem and make patients feel like they have to strategically hide them behind haircuts and hats. Otoplasty, also known as cosmetic ear surgery, can correct the shape, proportion, or position of one or both ears for children and adults alike. Dr. Peter Fisher in San Antonio, TX, studies the latest innovations in cosmetic facial procedures, ensuring that your ear surgery is accurate with up-to-date techniques. With over 25 years of experience, Dr. Fisher focuses on long-term outcomes, leaving our patients satisfied.

Very large or prominent ears can lead to low self-confidence throughout school-age years and long into adulthood.

Are You a Candidate?

Although an otoplasty can be performed safely on both children and adults at any age, children between the ages of five and fourteen often benefit the most because the cartilage is more pliable. Ears are generally fully grown by the age of four, and if your child’s ears are very large or prominent, it can lead to low self-confidence throughout school-age years and long into adulthood. Cosmetic ear surgery is generally performed for patients who have:

  • Large ears
  • Large or low hanging earlobes
  • Protruding ears
  • Asymmetrical ears
  • Congenital ear defects
  • Ear trauma

To determine your candidacy, Dr. Fisher will perform a thorough evaluation, taking into consideration your medical history, cosmetic goals, and current health. Patients who have chronic ear infections or smoke may not qualify for this procedure.

Types of Cosmetic Ear Procedures Available

Dr. Fisher can perform cosmetic surgery on the ear using a variety of techniques to address multiple concerns. Typically, there are three unique approaches to otoplasty:

Ear Pinning Surgery

With this procedure, Dr. Fisher can carefully reposition the shell of the ears closer to your head with strategic incisions behind the ear. Once the incisions are made, he will remove skin and excess cartilage until the agreed upon placement is achieved. Ear pinning is beneficial for patients who are happy with the size and shape, but concerned with how far the ears protrude.

Reconstructive Ear Surgery

If you are experiencing ear deformities, such as “cauliflower ear,” Dr. Fisher can use multiple surgical techniques to reconstruct the shape of your ear. In some cases, when there is not sufficient tissue, it will require a second surgical site so Dr. Fisher can graft cartilage from another area of your body.

Ear Reduction Surgery

This procedure is used for patients who struggle with asymmetrical ears, large ears, or low hanging earlobes as a result of heavy earrings. With this technique, Dr. Fisher will make discreet incisions throughout the ear folds and lobe to reduce and reshape cartilage and excess skin for a more balanced appearance.

What to Expect After the Procedure

After completing the procedure, Dr. Fisher will close the incisions with sutures and apply bandages and compression garments to protect the surgical site and minimize swelling. As an outpatient procedure, you can return home the same day, but you will need to follow your at-home care instructions carefully to help prevent complications from developing.

If you are unhappy with the shape or size of your ears, cosmetic ear surgery can provide many great benefits.

In about three days, you will return for a follow-up appointment so Dr. Fisher can check the incisions and redress the surgical site with fresh, lightweight bandages. One week after the procedure, sutures will be removed and a special headband applied to maintain the ear’s position. This headband will need to be worn for several weeks to ensure your ears remain in proper position, but can often be worn only at night. The overall healing period typically takes about six weeks. Once the swelling and bruising have subsided, you can enjoy better facial symmetry and renewed confidence.
